Expertise is the New Arrogance
The other week, I was told I was arrogant in a social media forum. The other person then cut me off and cut all ties altogether. I looked up arrogant and arrogance to see if it were true, that I am arrogant. One definition that I found was this – an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions. Now, I am pretty sure I don’t feel superior to anybody. Quite the reverse in fact. I think I am a bloody mess of emotions, thoughts, and reactions like most of the rest of humanity and that occasionally, when I remember, I am trying to figure all of this out. On the other hand, I am increasingly concerned by what I see in the world

I learned in the last few minutes of the passing away of Uncle Jack. He had, as we say, a good innings and in the end, I think he faded away as a result of old age. He wasn’t my Uncle at all but that is what I called him. He was my Dad’s best friend and they had known each other since childhood. I’m sure Dad will be pleased to have welcomed him to the other side… Jack was a constant figure in my childhood. We vacationed with him and his family, went weekend camp meets with them and much more. My Dad had no family to speak of and so Jack, his best friend, truly played the role of Uncle to me and my brothers. He was a

When I wrote The Last Observer, I never imagined that a real fight for reality would actually happen. However, inundated with information, we are subject to all sorts of reality creating content – some of it fake and much of it it twisted. Be aware that there is a battle going on for your mind and this battle isn’t what it seems. You see your mind is a powerful reality creating device and if someone can hijack your mind and get it working in a certain way, they can use you to create the reality that they want. The media and politicians, religious zealots, and others have always used this technique but today, the tools to do so are easy to obtain. We tend to surround ourselves with reality reinforcing

Come Down is a lovely melodic track with a theme on the guitar. The Sun is out today Shining like the star that it is Even I could never say That my life is wasting away Come down to me Be the person you aim to be Come down to me Let me touch Let me see The Moon is in the sky Reflecting the light of life I look and I stare But in the end I’m not sure I care You are the Sun, the Moon You are the stars that shine You are the one who came to stay Never to leave me anyway

Many of the people that I am attracted to are people who know how to say No. You see, I don’t. My biggest issue in life is wanting to be loved. Wanting to be wanted. I don’t know where this came from – certainly not my childhood as I was both loved and wanted. I was, it seems, simply born this way. I am therefore, a giver. I give and I give and I give. I avoid conflict whenever possible and I keep on giving and saying yes until I am simply taken for granted and abused. Someone in my past once told me that I don’t love myself. I’m not sure about that but certainly, I have a deep seated sense of insecurity. The funny thing is however, that

Many, many years ago as I sat in my student residence accommodation, I came across a sequence of picked chords that I really liked. For several months I had no idea what to do with them and then it clicked. I wrote a song that sounded like a heavy rock song. The lyrics were written in a jiffy and the song ‘Changes’ made its debut at a couple of ‘gigs. That was that. Of course, Changes was one of the first songs I tried to record for The Early Years. To be honest, it was a real challenge and I don’t think I did it real justice. Consequently, it is my least favorite song on the CD. Perhaps, one day, I will have another go because it really has potential.

Just me was another track where I found a nice chord progression and recorded it. I needed some kind of a bridge and change in tempo to make it work I thought and I came up with quite a heavy faster bridge that I thought worked. As is usual, the lyrics simply fell out towards the end… The vocals are triple tracked with one an octave lower and some harmonies. You never really tried No, it was just me You never really loved me No, it was just me You see Here I am now Sitting, looking out of my window And what do I see? I see a reflection of me Here I am again Sitting alone in my bedroom And what do I see? Another bloody reflection of

Something I said Something you said Gave me pause for thought Something I read In mind Something in red Something we do – in bed Something I thought Never mind It’s all gone pear-shaped It’s all gone strange It’s all gone upside down I’m moving around I’m here, I’m here Now, I’m here Not everyday Can I say What I want to say Not every moment Note every second Not every minute of every day This one also started with the music. It started out set to be heavy metal but somehow morphed into a catchy rock song I guess. A combination of power chords and picked chords with a driving bass line punctuated by a tempo change and a sort of melodic lead guitar at certain points provided for
