A Little Bowie in There?

I recently read a review of my 2019 album – The Anatomy of Love. It wasn’t the first time someone mentioned Bowie in a passing reference to my music but I have to say, it is a huge honor to ever be likened in any way at all to David Bowie – Rock God. Here is the review… The Anatomy of Love by G. Michael Vasey is a creative project by the Czech singer-songwriter with an ear for catchy melodies and European influences. Enjoyable tracks such as “Girl On The Phone” and “Free” demonstrate G. Michael Vasey’s unique talent and attention to detail through each song. Explosive guitar riffs and clean production values are prevalent through the entirety of The Anatomy of Love to express emotion and personality all its own. Fans of mod

Where Are the Reviewers?

I have been working my back catalog of books recently – changing covers and reworking descriptions and so on. It has had some positive results and sales are up! However, in doing this, it struck me – where are the reviews? It seems very few people review my books on Amazon and yet this is soooo important for authors. Rather than build an army of loyal fans like Steph Young, for example, who gets upwards of 70 reviews on her books and has a vibrant FB page despite the fact she posts nothing at all, all I seem to attract for my efforts is the odd mean 1-star review filled with falsities about poor editing and so on (I assume this is a competitor as it always pretty much the

Jammin’

My oldest son visited a week ago from Austin. We had a great time and it was so good to see him and see what a fine young man he is. Paul was always an amazing guitarist and so one night we got talking guitar. He ended up overlaying one of my songs with his guitar work – the result is out on Spotify today and all other music outlets. It’s a real rocker. It’s Out There is one of my favorite songs (of mine) and his guitar work just elevates it another level. Give it a listen… For good measure, I asked my daughter to add to the backing vocals too so its a family effort.

It’s My Life

One of my more popular songs is a rock anthem called It’s My Life. It was one of those songs that as a writer, it is in your head and drives you nuts. You play around on the guitar trying to actualize something in your head with increasing frustration because you can’t quite get there. And then -POW – you got it and in a few minutes of recording frenzy… its done….. and bugger it – I want this song played full volume at my funeral.   A few days ago, a FB friend sent me a private message…. he basically said I was brave to tell it like it was. He agreed with me but if he said as much, he’d be in trouble and lose his job. The

Videos to Promote Music

So I also made some videos to promote my music…. again – limited success but also rather variable.   Far Away Deni and I had a fun weekend making this with my iPhone – it was only at edit time we realized that we took it in the wrong mode so the image is small…. but we had fun… Just 46 views!   Anatomy of Love Made to promote the new album – well at 33 views I’d say – fail… Crazy Wow – more than 100 views. Could they ALL be me? Fire 111 views so far – so who knows? Girl on the Phone Over 2000 views! A hit? I made several others and ten discovered the record company makes them too…. So now I don’t bother.. They

Japan and Sylvian…. Amazing Music

It was a gloomy afternoon spent playing Dungeons and Dragons somewhere in Birmingham. Steve put on a record which initially I barely noticed but then began to focus on. It was probably the best thing I had heard in years and it was Gentlemen wear Polaroids by Japan. I promptly went out and bought it and spent hours playing it over and over again singing along with David Sylvian. It was unique. I bought Quiet Life and the earlier albums too in the coming weeks. A few years later, in Glasgow, I went to see them at the Glasgow Apollo. On my own. No one else seemed to like them but I had learned my lesson back in 1977 when I decided not to go see Bolan play because no

Cold-Hearted Girl

A song on the last album is cold-hearted girl. The actual riff that drives the song is something I have played with for decades – probably since 1974! I finally found a use for it. The lyrics were sang without any preparation – I just let the music take me and sang whatever came out… which was,   Cold hearted girl Cold hearted girl Cold hearted girl Cold hearted girl Outside its cold as ice Reminds me of your heart Your empty words That broke us apart Its plain to me that you think of yourself So now its goodbye My Joanna Cold hearted Cold Hearted Cold Hearted  Girl Outside the snow is falling Its filling your heart That frozen smile you use when you leave Its plain to me

Fire 2019

So another remixed song – this time its FIRE! I liked the original but I learned so much since I originally recorded it that I couldn’t resist tweaking it….. have a listen – I added harmonies and made it a bit more rocky… The next song will be all new! Meanwhile, Far Away remains by most popular effort with over 8000 streams on Spotify alone! Thanks….

Marketing – It’s all about Marketing

I have just spent hours this week trying to find ways to market my music and books. I’m a professional marketing person with a reputation for doing solid work but when it comes to marketing my stuff we are talking a different level of scale. Let me give you an example. I release a song – like this last one. I post it to twitter, Facebook, etc. – all the usual sites. I write a blog about it. Result – nothing …. people are too busy and quite honestly I’m selling something new every 5 minutes…. OK – let’s get clever then. I know, lets make a video to promote a song – like this one perhaps? Now that takes time… hours. I like the result – so now what?
