A Little Bit of Toast?

Many, many moons ago, in a far off Universe and another life, I was stage manager at Aston University Student’s Union. We occasionally held mid week concerts featuring local talent and it was during one of these that I met a band called Street band.  Street band were professional, banged out great music and fun to be around. We hired the band a few times and I got to know them pretty well including their manager and front man – a young man by the name of Paul Young. I liked them so much that when asked to organize an Aston Geology party, we hired…. Street band and had fun all evening. I recall, they brought toast. Toast became their defining moment as a band. It was their big hit.

Value Who You Are

I am a thought in the mind of God. A ripple of consciousness in time and space. I am making it up as I go along gaining in wisdom, experience and versatility as I go. My value is that I am. We must all value who and what we are. Unique as we all are, the death of a person takes with it countless life lessons and experiences……. Be yourself. Live! Do not be afraid. You are a well of experience, inspiration and yes, magic. So frolick in the Sun, laugh, be merry… and love with fury!

The Browning Cycle

Confused, you watch the others to see how it is done. After all, they are now all old hands at everything here. Tanned, comfortable and relaxed, the other guests seem almost brash in their state of relaxation. It’s hard not to contrast that with our own state of Lilly-whiteness and awkwardness, and of course we do, casting admiring glances at the other guests and commenting about them in hushed tones to each other. It’s a mixed bunch. There is the woman who is not just remarkably tanned but very evenly tanned to boot. She moves like a Queen with her head held high and shoulders back as if gliding a catwalk and everything she does is performed with a willful grace and poise that probably hides a deep lack of

Marketing – It’s all about Marketing

I have just spent hours this week trying to find ways to market my music and books. I’m a professional marketing person with a reputation for doing solid work but when it comes to marketing my stuff we are talking a different level of scale. Let me give you an example. I release a song – like this last one. I post it to twitter, Facebook, etc. – all the usual sites. I write a blog about it. Result – nothing …. people are too busy and quite honestly I’m selling something new every 5 minutes…. OK – let’s get clever then. I know, lets make a video to promote a song – like this one perhaps? Now that takes time… hours. I like the result – so now what?

Life Has Never Been Like This…

It’s easy to moan about modern life…. and a lot of people seem to do so. For me, though, modern life is amazing. I mean, here I am 59 years old and I’m doing my day job, writing books, making music, taking photographs and so much more. Not only that but I’m actually having a bit of success doing it. I wonder what other generation of humanity could boast such a feat! Most previous generations were focused on one thing – survival. It’s not just me that is having fun with creativity. According to an article I read this morning, there are 25,000 new songs added to Spotify every day! 1 million every 6-weeks. According to another article I googled just now, there is a new book added to Amazon

Joining the Dots – A Short Story

It was sometime in his mid-fifties that it struck him. Sitting one night, bored behind his computer screen, he suddenly had an idea. Increasingly feeling isolated and alone, he had begun to feel as if, somehow, life wasn’t really real. Reality wasn’t real. The feeling had started in his thirties and intensified as he got older. Life seemed out of control, beyond his sphere of influence. It was as if the world had been created just to keep him afraid and controlled. Or was it occupied? Yes, occupied. The more wars, threats of war, strikes, accidents and so on, the more occupied humans become with fear. Then there was the rise of social media and its avalanche of idiots who suddenly thought they knew more than the experts. This manifested

I Make Myself Sick

I’m just done reading an article I stumbled on somehow online. It’s on the Fox news site somewhere and it was by a self-professed Christian mother. In it she talked about how her Mother wouldn’t let her listen to Britney Spears when she was 6-years old and it finishes with a quote from the Bible. It just about made me vomit actually. I wondered for a minute about what kind of a person I am that I have this virulent reaction to these ‘Christian’ articles and messages. Am I bad for feeling like I want to puke when people quote ‘scripture’ at me? I realized, this isn’t a new reaction, I have felt this way much of my adult life…. start quoting the Bible or telling me what is the

The Loss of a Friend to Social Media

While doing my PhD in Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde, I met a wonderful, loving and balanced guy who became a mentor and friend. After leaving college, we lost contact but later found one another on facebook. A gap of twenty years meant that much had changed of course but still, it was good to reconnect. But people change. The problem with Facebook is that you see people’s bad side. Their obsessions and worries. I know I show mine all of the time and I sometimes decide to change my approach to Facebook and not use it as a place to express my frustrations…… However, my friend began posting quite a lot on politics. His postings and comments got more and more, well, strange. He developed an absolute hatred
